October 11, 1991|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Dalai Lama must abandon his campaign for Tibetan independence before he can return to his Himalayan homeland, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said. "The most important thing is that the Dalai Lama stop his activities aimed at splitting China and undermining the unity of its nationalities and abandon his position on Tibetan independence," ministry spokesman Wu Jianmin said. The Dalai Lama said he hopes soon to end his 32 years of exile and return to Tibet to "communicate directly with my people."
