Jobs and L.A.'s Gang Problem

December 01, 1991

Father Gregory Boyle's excellent column ("Waiting to Die or Get Locked Up," Commentary, Nov. 19) clearly points to "jobs and money, jobs and money" as the best single answer to the universally deplored problem of gangbanging.

Yet our leadership, both in politics and economics, blathers on and on and on about making the United States more "competitive," mostly by eliminating jobs in the U.S. Can any of our great brains explain, in honest and understandable English, how they propose to resolve this dilemma?
