Man or Meadow?

December 01, 1991

I regret to destroy the romantic charisma given to Camp "Vogelsang" in the High Sierra by Chuck Mitchell ("Heaven Is Hiking the Sierra--With Hot Showers," Nov. 17). (The word 'Vogelsang') has nothing to do with "meadow," but means in German "bird song" and is named in honor of a park ranger by that name.

G. BORDING MATHIEU, Laguna Beach. Editor's note: The park was named for Alexander Vogelsang, president of the California Board of Fish and Game Commissioners and the name also refers, in old German, to a meadow in which birds sing .
