Wine of the Week

December 05, 1991|DAN BERGER

\o7 1990 Round Hill California Chardonnay ($6)--\f7 One indication that a shakeout is going on in the California wine industry: some good values at wine stores. This Chardonnay, for example, is well worth its price. Its aroma is fresh and citrusy, with hints of tropical fruit and apples, and the finish is crisp and lingering. Round Hill used to make a wine called House Chardonnay, which has been dropped from the line, replaced by this wine. It is reasonably priced in part because 19% of the wine is not just Chardonnay but a blend of other white wines, and the result is complex and tasty. About 60,000 cases of this wine were produced. Many retailers will discount it to $4.99 or thereabouts.
