Bay Area art collectors James Coran and Walter Nelson-Rees, who lost their entire collection of historical California genre paintings in October's Oakland fire, will speak at the Palm Springs Desert Museum on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
The talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition, "California Grandeur and Genre: From the Collections of Friends of James L. Coran and Walter A. Nelson-Rees."
The exhibit will be on view at the museum through March 1.
Forty-seven paintings from Coran and Nelson-Rees' uninsured collection, which was valued as high as $40 million, were scheduled to be included in the exhibition. Following the loss, other collectors of California paintings substituted works from their own holdings for the exhibition.
Coran and Nelson-Rees are scheduled to recount their experiences as collectors and will show slides of the lost works.
