A corporation's mistake became a surprise windfall for Los Angeles city schools on Thursday.
Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner turned over a $200,000 check, paid as part of a fine for the illegal disposal of asbestos, to Board of Education President Warren Furutani at Franklin Avenue School.
The payment is part of a program to distribute to the community fines collected for environmental violations. Franklin Avenue School is near the Kaiser Foundation Hospital facility on Sunset Boulevard, where the asbestos was illegally dumped.
Kaiser found asbestos while renovating a parking structure at 4747 Sunset Blvd., but did not follow proper disposal procedures, authorities said.
The company pleaded no contest and paid a $750,000 fine on Nov. 21. Of that amount, $250,000 will go to the state Department of Toxic Substance Control, the county Hazardous Materials Control Program and the district attorney's office.
