But when the 20-year-old aquarist has a chance, she can be found studying the sea animals in order to create precise drawings of the creatures. Schumpert, a student at Grossmont College, initially wanted to draw for field guides, but then she learned of scientific illustration in a college class at UC Santa Cruz. She now creates black-and-white illustrations for the nature center and hopes to hone her skills by continuing her studies in marine science at UC Santa Cruz.
