Anti-Racist March Hits at Right, Left

January 26, 1992|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Thousands of anti-racist demonstrators marched through Paris, denouncing both the extreme-right National Front and the Socialist government for its tougher stance on immigration. Organizers said about 100,000 people joined the march, but police put the figure at 25,000. The protest was peaceful, with no disruption from National Front supporters. The organizers--civil rights groups, left-of-center parties and trade unions--called the demonstration to protest a climate of intolerance that National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen is exploiting to electoral advantage.
