Irwindale : Tutor Plan Action Delayed

February 23, 1992

The City Council again delayed action on a proposal by Councilman Robert Diaz for a city-run tutoring program for children having trouble in school.

Using only certified teachers at $22 an hour, Diaz recommended a budget of $76,600 for a yearlong program. Last month, Diaz had suggested a budget of $85,000.

Debate over the tutoring proposal was partly responsible for stalling the approval of Irwindale's $7.74-million budget. The budget was approved Jan. 23 without a tutoring program.

After Diaz brought up the idea of a tutoring program, Covina teacher Warren Kirkpatrick submitted a separate proposal for a program costing $37,000. Action on both was delayed while Diaz put his plan in writing.

The new Diaz proposal, given to other council members minutes before the Feb. 13 meeting, also offers a scaled-back tutoring program for $16,840.

The matter will be discussed at the council's meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
