Long Beach : Student Essay Winners to Leave on Trip to Singapore

February 27, 1992

Six 10th-graders from the Long Beach Unified School District will travel to Singapore in March, after winning a contest sponsored by the Los Angeles Times and Singapore Airlines.

The California Academy of Mathematics and Science students produced a four-page essay on California and Singapore, said Sandra Elliot, a Western civilization teacher at the academy.

The group will leave Los Angeles March 5 for the nine-day trip, along with four other winning groups from seven Southern California counties.

Elliot, who was chosen as a faculty sponsor by the students, will accompany the academy group.

The students and finalists from 12 other schools met Feb. 11 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Los Angeles to give oral presentations of their essays and answer questions about California and Singapore.

"They studied their brains out," Elliot said. "They were totally self-directed and motivated."

The Carson-based Academy, where 240 students from nine school districts attend classes, received the highest number of points scored during the presentations, she said.

Those who won the trip are Alex Caro, Angela Echizerri, Redza Ibrahim, Shannon Kelly, Marlen Luna and Daniel Lyons.
