Walnut : Battle Over Trash Recycling

March 01, 1992

The City Council is gearing up for a battle with the City of Industry over a proposed trash-recycling facility along Grand Avenue near Walnut's southeastern border.

Fearing increased noise, pollution and traffic congestion, the council approved preparation of petitions for Walnut residents and a call for meetings with City of Industry officials, who are applying for state permits for the facility.

"We have to let these people know that this is not acceptable," Councilwoman Bertha Ashley said.

The proposed facility is designed to recover recyclable materials from trash, with the remaining waste deposited in landfills.

Walnut officials said an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 tons of trash would be hauled each day to the proposed eight-acre site, less than half a mile from some Walnut homes.
