Long Beach : 4 Convicted of Robberies, Rapes in Belmont Heights

March 05, 1992

Last summer, four young men were accused of terrorizing the affluent Belmont Heights neighborhood and its surrounding areas in Long Beach, breaking into homes in the wee hours and robbing and raping their victims. Last Friday, they were convicted of up to 31 counts each of robbery, burglary, rape and other crimes.

Freddie L. Neal, Bennie L. Gibbs, Armando Murrieta and Terrence L. Roland were found guilty of committing the various crimes during June and July, 1991.

Prosecutor Ken Lamb said that the four men, who wore masks and carried guns, had 16 victims. "They entered houses, (and in some cases) tied people up, raped women, kidnaped one woman. . . . It was terrifying," Lamb said.

The men are scheduled to be sentenced March 20 in Long Beach Superior Court by Judge James B. Pierce.
