Pico Rivera : Rezoning Issue Postponed for Environmental Report

March 12, 1992

The decision to rezone a strip of industrial land for residential development off Kruse Road in Pico Rivera has been postponed two months pending an additional report from a Los Angeles environmental consultant.

The report will respond to community concerns raised at a public hearing in February, said Jay Kaplan-Wildmann of Gruen and Associates. Concerns included the possible health risks of building houses within 200 feet of power transmission lines. Some studies have linked the electromagnetic fields created by the lines with leukemia, lymphoma and cancer of the nervous system.

"A lot of emotional issues were raised, and those need to be addressed," Kaplan said. There is still research (about the health risks) under way, and we want to spell it all out for people."

The City Council will take up the issue once again at its first meeting in May. Should the rezoning be approved then, Kaplan said another environmental impact report will be required before housing can be built.
