Make Face, Not War

March 15, 1992

Re the picture accompanying Dick Roraback's review of "Monday's Warriors" (Feb. 16), the method of "fighting" used by the peaceful Maoris of New Zealand was to line up in opposing groups to make ugly faces at one another until one side gave up.

Anyone initiating physical violence during this "battle" would be killed by his own peers.

Alas, the Maoris were obliged to unite to fight with their own primitive weapons when the British arrived. . . .
