House of Games (Cinemax Thursday at 10:15 p.m.): David Mamet's coldly absorbing 1987 romantic thriller is almost as dry as remembered sin and involves a Seattle psychiatrist (Lindsay Crouse) pulled by desire and curiosity into the con games of the oily and smoothly antagonistic Mike (Joe Mantegna).

Miller's Crossing (HBO Saturday at 8 p.m.) Joel and Ethan Coen's 1990 period gangster picture is richly atmospheric and morally ambiguous as savvy mid-level hood (Gabriel Byrne) commences an odyssey in search of an underworld kingpin worthy of his allegiance. With Albert Finney and John Turturro.

The Importance of Being Earnest (KCET Saturday at 11:30 p.m.) A notable 1952 film of Oscar Wilde's sly comedy of manners has a remarkable cast headed by Michael Redgrave.
