Claremont : Hillside Houses Approved

March 19, 1992

A plan to build 125 hillside houses was adopted by the City Council on Tuesday despite protests from local environmentalists that the development would destroy some of the last remaining coastal sage scrub habitat in the area.

The city plans to buy 1,345 acres in the vacant land north of Mt. Baldy Road from Padua Hills Management Corp. and then sell 125 acres for the development, using the proceeds to maintain the remaining 1,220 acres as open space.

Representatives from the Pomona Valley Audubon Society and Friends of the Sage, a small, grass-roots group based in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, voiced concerns about the environmental effects of the plan, especially the loss of 85 acres of coastal sage scrub within the development.
