For Amateur Champion Voges, Augusta National Is Nirvana

April 09, 1992|MIKE DOWNEY

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The U.S. Amateur champion traditionally is paired with the defending Masters champion on the first day of play. Mitch Voges, 42, of Simi Valley, is excited about teeing off this morning with Ian Woosnam, but more excited about playing Augusta National.

"It's better than you expect," Voges said. "It's like a little kid when he goes to Disneyland the first time and he actually sees Mickey Mouse, and when he walks away he's got that little glow and buzz about him.

"For a golfer, that's the way you feel about Augusta. It's hallowed ground for a golfer. I get nervous just thinking about it. Anytime anybody mentions it to me, that little pit starts to come up there in my stomach. I just hope I'll be ready."
