The City Council unanimously appointed La Verne Police Lt. Ron Ingels to succeed Police Chief Wes Stearns, who will retire July 1.
Mayor Jon Harry Blickenstaff said that the city has in the past hired chiefs from within the department and outside but that after looking within the Police Department, "the council became convinced that it need look no further."
He added that Ingels has excellent relations with the community, something the recent riot in Los Angeles has shown to be very important.
Councilman Robert F. Rodriguez added that Ingels "will be one of the best police chiefs in the valley."
Ingels, who was supported for the position by the La Verne Police Officers Assn., is a graduate of Bonita High School and the University of La Verne.
He began his career 18 years ago with the La Verne Police Department and has served as senior police officer, detective, sergeant, and since 1984, lieutenant.
