Balanced Budget Amendment

June 07, 1992

Congress is getting hot on passing a balanced budget amendment. That is needed, but should it be done when the economy is weak or when the economy is strong?

Considering President Bush is going to lay off 500,000 soldiers, 400,000 civilian defense workers, cut weapons procurement by $75 billion, and Congress wants to take $2.9 trillion out of the economy with a balanced budget amendment, I think those actions together would cause a great depression and kill the economy.

By the way, all those actions are planned to take effect after the election so that voters can't do anything about it. What we need is a national industrial policy designed to ensure middle-class wages, not a great depression.
