Based on positive reactions from motorcyclists, Caltrans has decided to continue for several more months an experiment in which motorcycles can use the 11-mile El Monte Busway on the San Bernardino Freeway (10).

Caltrans began permitting motorcycles in the lanes normally restricted to buses and high-occupancy vehicles six months ago. During the next few months, traffic engineers will study accident data and vehicle counts.

Then, officials from Caltrans, the Southern California Rapid Transit District and the California Highway Patrol will decide whether to allow motorcycles in the bus lane permanently.
