Residents who have yard sales without first obtaining a city permit will be subject to a $20 fine under a new policy approved Tuesday.
The City Council also voted to increase the fee for the permit from $1.50 to $2.
Community Development Director Donald Hopper said that during the summer months there is a proliferation of yard sale signs placed illegally on utility poles and trees. It costs the city between $150 to $200 a week to have a staff member remove the signs, Hopper said.
