Summer Activities

August 02, 1992

I read with interest your piece on leisure time for youth. In it your reporter laments the lack of traditional youth activities at the Nickerson Gardens housing development. The Watts Friendship Sports League has been providing an ambitious program of suburban-type youth activities at Nickerson Recreation Center as well as Jordan Downs, Imperial Courts, 109th Street Recreation Centers and at Will Rogers Memorial Park and Markham Middle School.

Our program includes AYSO soccer, little league-type baseball, basketball, track and field and performing arts. We are serving over 1,400 children from Watts and have held clinics at UCLA, Cal State Dominguez Hills, West L.A. College and Southwest College.

We may have very few volunteers, but the dedication of our participating agencies has helped us succeed against great odds.

Our friendship approach has recently been fully implemented with teams from one housing project participating in regularly scheduled league games with other developments. There is much more we would like to do and our only limitations are money and volunteers.

GEORGE S. WOLFBERG, Commissioner, Watts Friendship Sports League, Los Angeles
