Inmate Sues to Practice Religion in the Nude

August 07, 1992|Associated Press

DIXON, Ill. — A prisoner is suing in federal court for what he says is his First Amendment freedom to worship in the nude.

The suit filed last week by Jesse Loden, who is serving 30 years for attempted murder and other crimes, asks for $1.5 million from the Illinois Department of Corrections and 13 people who work at the Dixon Correctional Center.

Loden, 48, says they stifled his religious freedom by preventing him from receiving books about voodoo and from getting letters or visiting his guru.

State prison spokesman Nic Howell said he would not comment on the allegations.
