Southland Jobs and Free Trade

August 09, 1992

If not a golden parachute we can provide a silver parachute for workers who have been abandoned by companies fleeing to foreign countries in search of cheap labor and huge profits.

The answer is a departure fee. Each such company would be required to cover a year's pay for each worker.

We taxpayers should not have to provide retraining, unemployment insurance and welfare for the workers these companies leave behind.

The factories they build across the border will foul our air and beaches. We will pay for the cleanup too.

A departure fee is the answer.
