Pasadena : Activist Charged in Assault

August 13, 1992

A community activist who was credited with helping to keep the peace in Pasadena during the Los Angeles riots was charged Tuesday with assaulting a police officer during a July 18 melee in Washington Park.

Cheryl Hubbard, a member of the Pasadena City Art Commission, was charged with one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly striking Officer Kelly Evans with his own baton. Hubbard was also charged with one misdemeanor, battery on a police officer.

Hubbard pleaded innocent in Pasadena Municipal Court. Her attorney, Joe Hopkins, has said that Evans beat Hubbard in an unprovoked attack and that his client was trying to defend herself.

Patrick Williams, 26, also pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of assaulting a police officer during the brawl. Officers had responded to break up a fight in a gathering of about 200 people.

Hubbard and Williams are free on their own recognizance pending a Sept. 1 preliminary hearing.
