Farewell Family

August 16, 1992

I chuckled upon reading the buffalo encounter in "Facing Up to Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills" (Family Postcard, July 12) as it echoed my experience in the same campground last May. At 4 a.m., buffalo marched by our tent, which I believe we'd parked in their nightly thoroughfare. My friend and I lay petrified like deer in front of headlights listening to the animals huffing for two hours. We finally peeked out only to see them munching grass contentedly. I gained a new respect for the terror wild animals must feel when unpredictable humans approach.
