Everybody Seems to Be Infighting On at USC

August 22, 1992

Before Cardinal and Gold blood begins to boil over in the coming football season, it should be mentioned that much of USC's football problems lie at the head of the athletic department.

While the heads of that department routinely criticize people such as track Coach Jim Bush, who is busy producing athletes such as Olympic champion Quincy Watts, they continue to endorse a football program which, without Ted Tollner's recruits, has accomplished little more than embarrassment. The continuous infighting among players, coaches and administrators demonstrates a considerable lack of leadership at the highest level.

Despite the university's admirable goal of higher academic standards, either the president or the Board of Trustees needs to realize that much of the collective identity of the university still rests with the success or lack thereof of the football program.

"Get It Back" should no longer be the theme of the USC football coaches and players attempting to reclaim a Rose Bowl berth but rather the battle cry of alumni, students, fans and supporters to put the athletic department back in the hands of the people who built the tradition, SC people!
