El Rancho Unified School District : Schools Chief Elizondo Announces Resignation

August 27, 1992

Only 20 months after taking the job, El Rancho Unified Supt. Fernando Elizondo announced this week that he will resign as of Aug. 31 for unspecified "personal reasons."

The Board of Education has selected Assistant Supt. John T. Sherman to replace Elizondo on an interim basis. Sherman has been a district employee for 31 years. The board has offered Elizondo, 49, a "day-to-day contract" as a consultant until Nov. 30 during the transition.

Elizondo said only that "personal reasons outside of the district" prompted his resignation. Elizondo said he will apply for school superintendent positions in Northern California. "I wouldn't accept a position in L.A. County," he said, adding that wanting to move was part of his motivation for leaving.

Elizondo said he is proudest of balancing the district budget and developing long-range goals.
