In Brief

RECORD RACK

September 27, 1992|STEVE HOCHMAN and New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).

* * * Eric Clapton, "Unplugged," Reprise. This acoustic quickie from an MTV appearance centers on the maudlin but moving "Tears in Heaven" (written for Clapton's young son, who died in a fall last year) and the low-key but seductive recasting of "Layla." But seven crackling old blues numbers--from such sources as Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and Big Bill Broonzy--make the most of the intimate setting and make this Clapton's most passionate collection in years.
