Seventh-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria upset No. 3 Anke Huber of Germany, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, on Friday to advance to the semifinals against top-seeded Steffi Graf at a women's tournament in Leipzig, Germany.
In another upset, Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia defeated second-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Graf advanced past Maleeva's younger sister, Magdalena, 6-2, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia defeated Sabine Appelmans of Belgium, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Top-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia defeated Cedric Pioline of France, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tournament at Basel.
Korda will play No. 3 Ivan Lendl, who beat Andrei Chesnokov of Russia, 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 Boris Becker of Germany defeated No. 7 Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (8-6), 6-3, and will face Marc Rosset of Switzerland, who eliminated Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-2, 6-4.
It took Becker 2 hours 35 minutes to defeat Mansdorf. The turning point came at the beginning of the third set when Mansdorf lost his serve and fell behind 3-0.
Rosset, the singles gold medalist at Barcelona, beat Lundgren in 67 minutes. Becker said the pairing will be a "match in which you'll have to count the aces." Becker has 47 aces, Rosset 37.
Third-seeded Emilio Sanchez defeated Tomas Carbonell, 6-2, 6-3, to join two other Spaniards in the semifinals of the Internazionali di Sicilia clay court tournament at Palermo. Sanchez will face Renzo Furlan of Italy in the semifinals. Furlan defeated Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-4, 6-4.
Jim Grabb, seeded eighth, the lone remaining seeded player in the Queensland Open in Brisbane, lost in the quarterfinals to Kenneth Carlson of Denmark, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Ann Grossman, seeded second, rallied to defeat eighth-seeded Wang Sz-ting of Taiwan, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of a women's tournament in Taipei, Taiwan. Top-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa defeated sixth-seeded Debbie Graham of Fountain Valley, 6-3, 7-5.
