Reader Would Like More Local Coverage

October 04, 1992

As a long-retired editor and publisher of weekly newspapers, (last one Glendora Press) and some 30 years of being a marketing consultant, I read The Times thoroughly every morning. I thoroughly enjoy it, and find the business section very useful.

I seek out the San Gabriel Valley section and glance through it, looking for local news. I regret to say I find very little. I find you are trying to cover 30 communities in eight pages. I used to fill eight pages with local stuff here in Glendora. That's what hurts my soul. I see so many stories that cry to be printed.

Why do you make it so hard to find Section J--in back of the classified and the stack of brochures, flyers or whatever? This morning my 82-year-old eyes had to look twice to find the San Gabriel Valley section. Why not put it out front, where people can see it? Call attention to it. I bet 50% of Times readers never even open it.

I also realize, from long experience, surviving many recessions, the vicious impact on newspapers. The ads control the number of pages.
