Homage to Africa

October 04, 1992

It was heartwarming to see Christopher Reynolds' front-page piece ("The African-American Connection," Sept. 20). His interesting story should have helped to bring an awareness to Afro-Americans of the pleasures of African travel to seek their roots. Yet he honestly revealed that African travel involves some travail, which only adds to the learning process. I silently paid tribute to the organizers of his tour, who had to overcome ignorance and cost.

I recently closed my 10-year-old agency, where I attempted to emulate Henderson Travel Service (one of the companies mentioned in the guidebook accompanying the story). Even now, although my agency has succumbed to recession, I am striving to smother the urge to promote African travel.
