A Clarion Call to Retain Arts

October 18, 1992

In a time when the news is so grim about our public school system and our government is so unsupportive of the arts, it is refreshing and encouraging to read that the Garden Grove Unified School District has chosen to make fine arts a priority ("Putting the Arts on a Pedestal," Oct. 4).

The philosophy of this school district and the measures taken by its board members to implement the fine art programs are to be commended and copied by the less creative school districts who do not know how to cut budgets and have forsaken art and music for football and the like.

I can't think of a better way to bridge the gaps of race, religion and language than to be introduced to something we can all understand, a song we can all sing, a painting we can all admire or just the desire to learn and share something beautiful.
