SOUTH-CENTRAL : Ceremony for New Policing Council

October 18, 1992|DUKE HELFAND

Members of a new community-based policing council in the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Division will be installed Nov. 2 at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 7900 S. Western Ave.

The 80 council members--including business leaders, youths, block group activists, church representatives and senior citizens--were selected this year during community elections. The installation ceremony and dinner were postponed by the riots.

City Council members Mark Ridley-Thomas, Rita Walters and Ruth Galanter are scheduled to attend the 7 p.m. ceremony. Police Chief Willie L. Williams and Deputy Chief Mathew Hunt, who heads operations for South Bureau, and Capt. Pat Froehle of the 77th Street Division also are expected.

Community-based policing was a key recommendation of the Christopher Commission, which investigated the Police Department after the beating of Rodney G. King. Williams has said he plans to set up community policing programs in each of the department's 18 divisions.
