Only Thing Missing May Be Boxmania VII

December 26, 1992

Boxing used to be a contest between two fighters inside the ring. Now it's a contest between promoters outside the ring.

Champions used to be the best fighters in their divisions. Now they are little more than carefully maneuvered pawns that avoid legitimate challenges. Champions used to say, "I can lick any man on the planet." Now they say, "I can lick any man on the planet, provided they can't lick my mother."

Fights used to be held in stadiums and arenas. Now they're held in casinos and country clubs. Fights used to take place on weekend afternoons and Friday nights. Now they take place at halftime of football games.

Boxing used to be unlike professional wrestling. Now we can't tell the difference.
