The Joy of Reading : Volunteers Reach Kids Early With Simple Message: Books Can Be Fun : BRENDA GOTTFRIED and LOIS MILLER LAURIE K. SCHENDEN, Brenda Gottfried, who has a law degree and is a mediator in Santa Monica, is president of Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California, which promotes reading for fun in the inner city. She is a former teacher who volunteered for RIF nearly 5 1/2 years ago. Lois Miller is a past president of RIF and now helps distribute books to 92 RIF sites. She is a retired first-grade teacher and school district librarian from Montebello. They were interviewed by Laurie K. Schenden.
