Regarding "Channeling Chaplin," by Hilary de Vries (Dec. 20):

Robert Downey Jr. must adore Richard Attenborough as much as he does Chaplin, for how else would he tolerate Attenborough's condescending remarks?

Attenborough has cast himself as consummate technician rescuing Downey's career from undisciplined ruin. Nowhere is it mentioned that Attenborough's films have been a stuffy lot. If early reviews are to be believed, "Chaplin" is too, relieved only by Downey's performance.

Perhaps Downey could give Attenborough lessons in spontaneity and comic edge. Who's holding up whom?
