Humanity always defends that which is pleasing and easy to accept, while seeking to discredit anything uncomfortable, challenging or unpleasant. A perfect example is how we view Jesus Christ ("The Gospel Truth," by Tom McNichol, Dec. 13).
Note what most of the academics in the Jesus Seminar say is acceptable to believe: Christ was compassionate, thought-provoking, loving and constantly fighting for the downtrodden--enough to give us a warm fuzzy feeling about this Jesus fellow.
