Little Leaguers to Get Trophy for World Title

February 25, 1993

The Long Beach Little League team will finally receive its world championship trophy in opening day ceremonies at Stearns Park Saturday.

Long Beach was awarded the title in October after Little League officials discovered that the winning team from the Philippines used several players who were more than 12 years old, the maximum age allowed.

Long Beach had lost to the Philippine team, 15-4, last August in Williamsport, Pa., in the championship game of the Little League World Series.

The championship trophy was given to the Philippine team in Williamsport after the victory. It was only recently returned to the United States.

Eight of the 12 boys who played on the Long Beach team are playing Pony League now because they are 13 years old, but all are expected to be at Stearns Park for the ceremonies, which begin at 9:30 a.m.
