Small Army Speaks to El Toro Closure Plan

March 21, 1993

Contrary to what may be majority opinion regarding the closing of the El Toro Air Base, I prefer not to take a stand against or for closing. I do have great apprehension regarding the consequences to my community, Leisure World, should the base be opened to the development of a commercial airport.

I would like to offer this suggestion as an alternative: Develop the area for the homeless. Use the existing housing first and the administration offices. Provide schools on the property, including a technical school for retraining the displaced Marines as well as the residents. Open a clinic and social service office. Use the runways and the airplane spaces for temporary housing (mobile homes).

Enough of talk regarding peace dividends. Let's get on with it!
