ALLA BREVE

March 28, 1993|JOHN HENKEN

IRISH AIRS AND DANCES. Anisa Angarola, guitar; Thomas Axworthy, recorder; Tommy Hayes, percussion; Valerie King, flutes; Joemy Wilson, hammered dulcimer. Dargason Music DMCD-110. Angarola's fresh and evocative arrangements buoy this 14-track collection as much as her lithe, direct playing. Her solo Dowland efforts--two galliards and the traditional song "Go From My Window"--are perhaps too direct, short on nuance and interpretive flair. The ensemble reels, though, are nimble joys, nicely balanced by the moody airs for guitars and flutes.
