COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Keep 2 Streaks Alive With Victory over Pacific

March 29, 1993

The Cal State Fullerton baseball team continued two streaks by defeating Pacific, 6-2, Sunday at Fullerton College.

The Titans (19-7, 9-0 in the Big West), ranked sixth in the nation by Baseball America, won their 11th consecutive game and swept three games from their third consecutive conference opponent.

With the victory, Fullerton tied its best conference start. In 1976, the Titans started Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play 9-0 on the way to their second consecutive conference tittle.

Sunday's game was played at Fullerton College because the grounds at Titan Stadium were too wet. Tony Banks gave the Titans an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning, his fifth homer of the season.

Pacific (20-14, 3-6) tied the score with runs in the fourth and fifth innings off starter Derek Fahs, but the Titans scored once in the sixth and then three more times in the eighth, on a two-run double by Kyle Evans and a run-scoring single by Nate Rodriquez.

Kimson Hollibaugh (3-2), who pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, got the victory.

In the Cal State Fullerton PONY softball tournament:

Northridge wins--Scia Maumausolo hit a home run in the top of the seventh to give Cal State Northridge, ranked seventh in the nation, a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Oklahoma State in the championship game. Fullerton (15-14) lost its consolation game to Florida State, 4-1, when Florida State scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

In nonconference men's tennis:

Colorado 5, UC Irvine 4--The 24th-ranked Anteaters dropped to 6-8 this season after losing to visiting Colorado.

Chris Tontz, Aaron Stolpman and Fred Bach and the doubles team of Carlos Bustos and Randy Ivey won their matches for UCI.
