Hillary Clinton as 'Consort'

April 01, 1993

The nepotism and laws pertaining thereto discussed by Suzanne Garment on March 14 (Opinion) have very little to do with the opposition to Hillary Rodham Clinton and her White House duties.

During the first part of the campaign when she started making speeches including the ones on "Elect Bill, and you get two-for-one" and "What do you want me to do, stay home and bake cookies," the vast majority of the electorate were totally repulsed. Campaign advisers sensed all of this and turned her off; she was totally quiet the rest of the campaign.

Now that he is elected, (and not by a majority), the two act like it was a two-for-one all along, and she is presented as a big bonus. There is no doubt in my mind that if they had promulgated that during the campaign, the Clintons would not be sitting in the White House now.
