LARCHMONT VILLAGE : Volunteers, Pledges Sought for Projects

April 04, 1993|JAKE DOHERTY

L.A. Works, a nonprofit group that coordinates volunteer projects throughout Los Angeles, is planning a large-scale volunteer effort called "The Works" on April 24.

Organizers hope to draw more than 1,000 volunteers for projects around the city.

Volunteers are encouraged to register with L.A. Works by Saturday to participate in one of more than 30 projects, including painting and renovating schools and community centers, planting trees, working with homeless youths, visiting nursing homes and sorting goods at a food bank, said David Green, acting executive director.

Although there is no fee to participate, volunteers are encouraged to seek pledges from sponsors to help support L.A. Works, Green said.

Founded in 1991 by actor Richard Dreyfuss, L.A. Works is at 424 N. Larchmont Ave. The group is seeking donations of books and sports equipment for use at community centers, shelters and schools.
