Ban on Apple Imports Draws U.S. Protest: The United States has lodged a protest over Japan's ban on U.S. apples, which the Japanese government claims can carry fruit disease and pests. An official at Japan's Office of Trade and Investment Ombudsman said it had received the complaint, but he would not elaborate. Japan says the apples carry a pest moth and a bacterium that causes fire blight. The destructive and highly infectious fruit disease makes leaves appear scorched or blackened.
