L.A. Art Invitational

April 10, 1993

As one of the organizers and participants in the L.A. International Invitational, I am responding to Christopher Knight's article "The World Comes to L.A. . . . Sort Of" (March 19).

Knight is presumptuous and short-sighted in condemning the reach of L.A. International's goals. Forty gallerists began over a year ago to create an international event in the visual arts. The goal was to energize our own community while reconfirming the presence of Los Angeles in global art.

We organized a unique event that has never been done before in this country or abroad. We assumed a leadership position in a very difficult economic time. We opened up a dialogue with our colleagues around the world. We brought new work to the public.

We welcome Knight's critical discussion of individual shows, but we resent his denigration of our efforts. While the cultural community at all levels struggles to survive, more negativity does not encourage the vital participation, curiosity and learning we hope to foster.
