All About Oscar

April 11, 1993

Talking of his movies in Calendar ("A Hollywood Legend's List," March 28), Fred Zinnemann averred that, in "The Day of the Jackal," Edward Fox "had to say a ridiculous line--'Nothing is ever a lady's fault.' "

I wrote the screenplay of "The Day of the Jackal," and there is no such line in the film.

But I am confident that, had the line existed, Fox's delivery would have exonerated all the collaborators from disapprobation.
