All About Oscar

April 11, 1993

Jack Mathews' article on Clint Eastwood ("Clint, Closing In on El Dorado," March 28) clearly showed why Eastwood has maintained his popularity with moviegoers for almost 30 years.

However, his statement that Eastwood is "a more enduring star than . . . John Wayne" cannot be left unchallenged. Between 1949 and 1974 Wayne placed among the nation's Top 10 box-office attractions for a record 25 years. Eastwood, with 19 years (1968-1986) among the Top 10, is ranked No. 2 all time. Eastwood has quite a way to go to equal Wayne's record of nearly 175 starring films spanning a 47-year career from 1929 to 1976.
