L.A. Festival Unveils Logo

April 12, 1993

The Los Angeles Festival has unveiled the logo for its 1993 festival, which will celebrate African, African-American and Middle Eastern arts and culture from Aug. 20 to mid-October. According to creators MaryLynne Barbis and Patrick Raske, partners in the West Hollywood design firm Barbis & Raske, the logo is influenced by imagery ranging from "ancient figurative wall paintings of celebrations to large-scale movie musicals of the 1930s" and is meant to project "the idea of people coming together in unity, remaining individual yet forming a greater total." Typographically, the "Los" in "Los Angeles" is rendered with a lower case "l" in deference to its Hispanic origins.
