Sen. Teresa Hughes

April 12, 1993

State Sen. Teresa Hughes (D-Inglewood) has been given a requested bodyguard because she fears for her safety when she comes to Los Angeles (April 2). Everyday, the ordinary citizens must face the dangers of living in L.A. and, far too often, they're gunned down in the streets. Their only protection is an understaffed police force. They face these dangers while their tax dollars pay for such politicians' perks as bodyguards, cars, pay hikes, outrageous pensions, "seminars" at luxury resorts, overseas travel, etc.

The pols are fast to find the tax dollars when it comes to finding funding to pay for their perks but become tightfisted when it comes to allocating tax dollars to put more police on the streets. It's obvious that their philosophy is "First we take care of ourselves, then the taxpayers. Even if it kills them." It's an absolute disgrace.
